Introduction: Why Subsea Inspections Matter in Marine Structures
Offshore and marine structures are constantly exposed to harsh conditions — saltwater corrosion, underwater currents, and structural stress. Over time, these factors can lead to material degradation, reduced thickness, and potential failure. To maintain operational safety and efficiency, regular underwater inspection using non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques is essential.
Project Overview
Kalout Marine Engineering was assigned a strategic inspection task: performing a full underwater NDT operation on the dual-purpose oil jetty at Lavan Island, a vital energy hub in southern Iran. The objective was to evaluate the structural integrity of all jetty piles through precise thickness measurements and generate a comprehensive corrosion status map.
Technical Execution
Step-by-step Inspection Process
The operation began with mapping and segmenting all piles for inspection. Our commercial diving team performed real-time ultrasonic thickness measurements (UT) on each pile. All data were recorded on-site and validated after each dive.
Equipment and Tools
- UT (Ultrasonic Thickness) Gauges for subsea use
- Live underwater imaging systems
- Surface communication units for diver coordination
Environmental Conditions and Challenges
The inspection was conducted in live marine conditions near Lavan Island. Challenges included limited underwater visibility, strong currents, and operational time constraints. The Kalout team overcame these challenges through disciplined planning and professional execution.
Outcome and Deliverables
Post-inspection, our engineering team compiled a detailed report and corrosion map showing areas with reduced wall thickness or structural concern. The final deliverable provided the client with actionable data for maintenance planning and long-term infrastructure integrity.
Contribution to Marine Asset Integrity
This project helped the client make data-driven decisions about potential repairs, overhaul needs, and preventive maintenance. With minimal disruption to jetty operations, Kalout’s inspection ensured increased structural safety and prolonged service life.
