Pipeline clamp installation is a critical offshore repair technique used to stop leaks and reinforce subsea pipelines without the need for full replacement. In one of Kalout Marine Engineering’s specialized offshore projects, our team successfully executed the installation of 12-inch and 16-inch clamps at a depth of 67 meters, ensuring the integrity and safety of the subsea pipeline system.
Project Overview
-
Scope: Subsea leak detection and clamp installation
-
Depth: 67 meters
-
Location: Offshore waters
-
Equipment: DP II dynamically positioned vessel, ROV, mixed gas diving system
-
Objective: Detect leak points, prepare pipeline surface, and install clamps to restore safe operation.
Why Clamp Installation is Used
A pipeline clamp is a robust mechanical device designed to encase a damaged section of a pipeline, sealing leaks and providing structural reinforcement. This method is widely preferred in offshore oil & gas operations because it:
-
Eliminates the need for costly pipeline replacement.
-
Minimizes downtime in production.
-
Can be installed while the pipeline remains submerged and operational.
Execution of the Project
-
ROV Survey and Leak Detection
The operation began with the deployment of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to inspect the pipeline, record high-definition imagery, and accurately pinpoint the leak location. -
Mixed Gas Diving Operations
Due to the operational depth of 67 meters, the project required mixed gas diving, enabling safe and efficient underwater work beyond conventional air diving limits. -
Pipeline Preparation
The dive team removed protective coatings and cleaned the affected area to ensure proper clamp fitting. All work was executed in compliance with international subsea safety and inspection standards. -
Clamp Installation
Specialized 12-inch and 16-inch clamps were carefully positioned and secured over the damaged sections. The installation restored the pipeline’s integrity and prevented further leakage. -
DP II Vessel Positioning
The entire operation was supported by a DP II (Dynamically Positioned) vessel, ensuring stable positioning over the work site without the need for anchoring — critical in deepwater offshore environments.
Challenges
-
Low visibility underwater due to sediment disturbance.
-
Maintaining precision alignment of the clamps in strong subsea currents.
-
Managing extended bottom times for divers at depth with strict decompression schedules.
Project Outcomes
The successful completion of this project:
-
Restored safe and continuous pipeline operation.
-
Avoided costly shutdowns or full pipeline replacement.
-
Demonstrated Kalout’s capability in deepwater subsea repair and maintenance.
